After graduating from Stewart School in 2000 Kyle Shedd the Columbus East High School’s 2006 Valedictorian allowed us to present you with an article about his past.

While attending Stewart School, Kyle Shedd enjoyed the school enthusiastically and loved the fact that he was able to know and have fun with his classmates.

Way back when, when Kyle was just a young child he attended Children’s Garden. The only thing he was able to recall about pre-school was learning how to tie his shoes and he played with animals a lot.

As a student at the Elementary School, Kyle enjoyed Culture class because he was interested in the past. He really didn’t have any particular problem with any subject except he claims that he had difficulty in handwriting and grammar. Some of his best moments and memories include all the field trips, capture the flag, and water day. His top three field trips were the Washington D.C. trip, the Space camp trip, and the Bradford Woods trip.

Kyle remembers a few teachers from Stewart; Ms. Pat, Mr. Carmichael, Mr. Maulin, Mrs. Breeding, and of course, his long time friend, Mrs. Carmichael. While at Stewart, Kyle Shedd participated in being on the basketball team. Later, he wasn’t able to play basketball any more because he didn’t make the junior high school team.

Even though he probably wasn’t a big fan of Stewart’s homework, he says it was worth it because it prepared him for the rest of his schooling. Kyle’s favorite days at school were the Halloween party, the Thanksgiving feast, and the Valentine Tea (chocolate). Kyle is a bright man and was a Stewart graduate.

Kyle is a member of the Columbus East High School Cross Country, Track, (whose team won the conference the other day!), the Bartholomew County Historical Society, National Honors Society, Spanish National Honors Society, Academic Team, Economics Challenge Team, and many other volunteer activities. Wow!!!

During summer vacations Kyle has done yard work, cross country training, taken a road trip, and last year, he studied in Spain for seven weeks. He said in Spain the lifestyle is much different, the food is great, he enjoyed walking the city, and the social life was amazing. I suspect that was one of the favorite trips of his life.

He has received awards and recognition for academics, athletic, and community service. Kyle thinks that working in the community is great and is a great way to explore different points of view.

Every year students talk about how intense and scary saying there graduation speech is. Kyle only recalls how nervous he was and the bright lights. (I recall the same things.) Kyle said he has sympathies for Stewart students who are writing graduation speeches as he is writing one also this year. When he graduated from Stewart, he felt a little sad but realized he would see his friends in Middle School.

He is excited and sad about leaving his high school friends. He will enjoy being out on his own and making his own decisions. He plans to attend Northwestern University next year. He chose that school because of size, great programs, and it isn’t very far from his parents. Kyle has a few minor scholarships and was also a finalist for the Lilly Endowment Scholarship. Kyle plans to major in Spanish and Biochemistry.

In his opinion, his greatest accomplishment is learning how to balance all his work and activities. His only advice to students at Stewart is “Work hard now and it will pay off in the long run.”
