Kevin Marshall, an alumnus of ABC Stewart, graduated in the class of 1984. He attended ABC Stewart for 9 or ten years. He remembers independent study, silent reading, when the school used to be at Bakalar Airport (they moved after he finished fifth grade), and the fort that was at the playground there. He especially remembers two of his teachers, Mary Pearl and Sue Mumley.

His graduating class was four people, including Paul Carmichael, Mike DeArmitt, Kim Sutton, and himself. He went to Northside Middle School, and North High School. In junior high, he was in track and tennis. He ran in the half-mile and the mile. He was on the track team at school, but played tennis separately. In high school, he continued track through his freshman and sophomore years, and his best time on the mile was 4:56. He played tennis all four years on the school team. His senior year, his tennis team went to the final four. They were undefeated going into the state championships, where they placed third in the state.

He graduated from Middlebury College in Middlebury, Vermont, a small school of about 2,000 students, which is a lot smaller than Indiana University. At Middlebury, a liberal arts school, Kevin majored in political philosophy, and the classics. You have 10 major classes and 3 or 4 minor classes. When he graduated from college, he didn’t go directly to law school He went out west with his sister Lisa.

He has two sisters, on is in the seventh grade and Lisa is now 23. They went to Yellowstone National Park, Yosemite National Park, Grand Tetons National Park, the Grand Canyon, and lots of other places. They drove 10,000 miles in 30 days. After that, he went to Europe by himself for 2 months. He slept in a different place each night. Then he went to Alta, Utah, where he lived in a ski lodge. There he worked at the front desk of the Key Lodge. He went skiing about every day.

Now he is serving as law clerk for Judge Mike Luttig. When his year is complete, he will be a clerk for Justice Clarence Thomas! A clerk serves a judge for one year.

Kevin’s hobbies are reading, especially history, snow skiing, wind surfing, ice hockey, guitar, and jazz piano. His advice to Stewart today is that you should find a subject you like, and work hard in that subject.
